“The light shines in the darkness, and the darkness has not overcome it.” John 1:5
Two thousand years ago, this was the Las Vegas of the world. Beit She’an, the ancient Scythopolis, was the largest and richest of the ten cities of the Decapolis, a city built for pleasure, with a theater for thousands and a name borrowed from the god of wine.
And into that place, the light came anyway. Jesus did not stay in the holy towns. He walked into the darkest, least holy city in the land, hunting for the ones the world had thrown away, to bring them home.
I filmed this walking Beit She’an alone, in a season when the war has emptied these paths and the pilgrims are praying from home. It is about mercy, about the souls that need saving, and about a farm in the Golan where the broken of October are learning to breathe again.
Short pieces from the film, made to share.
